DESPITE currently lying next-bottom of the Welsh Premier table, the Wingmakers are still only three points behind fourth-placed Bala Town, leaving everything to play for in the remaining games before the split.
"The league is very tight, but I'm pleased with the way we're playing," says manager Andy Thomas. "I've managed to get my own style of play across and we're seeing the rewards of it now, because we're dominating most games but we keep giving silly goals away – that's something we'll iron out in time though."
Thomas sees his team take on Aberystwyth Town in Saturday's live Sgorio match and he told FAW.Cymru that he recently watched the Seasiders.
"I went to watch Aberystwyth on Sunday against Llandudno, they're a very good team, but we're just working on ourselves and what we do on the day – if we keep doing what we're doing when we're on the ball and cut out the mistakes then we can do well."
It has been a challenging period for Thomas and the club, especially given that the Wingmakers have become used to competing in Europe over the last few years.
The turnover in playing personnel has hampered progress too, as the Wingmakers have had to rebuild from the ground up.
"It has been a massive challenge for me to come in and do the job, the club lost 13 players over the summer and come the first game of the season we didn't really have a squad to work with, which isn't ideal.
"We'd been using trialists in a lot of our pre-season games, so as a squad we didn't really have a pre-season to work together and develop an identity or a style of play. We've had to do all of that during the season since I've came in, but I think we've come on massively since the first game of the season and there's still a lot more to come.
"It's been very hard, because we've dropped a lot of points in matches where we really should have won or got more out of them than we did, but performances have got better each week to be fair and we're moving in the right direction."
Last weekend Thomas' men dominated the game against Carmarthen but they could only secure a draw.
Had Airbus managed to win, the Wingmakers would now be sat inside the Top Six as opposed to the relegation zone.
"It's happened to us in a few other games to be honest, where we've given silly goals away after dominating the game, and that's why we are where we are in the league at the moment.
"We've been in every game we've played this season, it's not as if people have given us a good going over or anything like that; we've dominated a lot of our games to be honest, we've had no luck at all but we just need to keep doing our best and the results will come.
"We've got some young lads in the side, some inexperience, but we're all still learning about each other as players and as coaches – if we'd have had a pre-season together then I would have had more time with everyone, perhaps to bring some more players in too.
"It'll probably be next season when we bring three or four more players in to suit our way of playing that we'll really get back to a level I think we should be playing at; we're making good progress, but we're in the middle of a massive rebuilding process to be honest."
