Preece relieved as goals start to flow again

DIRECTOR of football Andy Preece said he was "really pleased" with Saturday's victory over Bangor City and relieved that the goals have started to flow again.

The Wingmakers hit five for the second week running after a goal drought in recent games.

"Playing Bangor at any time is tough and the position they are in they are fighting hard for Nev [Powell]," Preece said.

"But I thought today we were pretty much near our best, we were pretty clinical in the final third which is something we've talked about all season that we haven't been.

"There are signs that it is coming right now and, with 10 goals in the last two games, I couldn't ask for more."

With 10 goals in two games Preece said: "It's nice for us to be saying that because in our first full season here we were doing that and we've scrapped and struggled to score goals this season, but now we look like we are going to score every time we go forward.

"We scored some quality goals with clinical finishes and we just asked questions all the time of Bangor and any team under that kind of pressure is going to find it hard to keep a clean sheet here."

The only blot on an otherwise perfect afternoon was the concession of a goal from a corner and Preece took responsibility.

"I made a substitution before the set piece which is Something that I don't normally do so I'll blame myself on that one," admitted. 

"We've got to defend that better but to beat Bangor 5-1 at any time is a great result for us.

"I wouldn't say it was easy, we had to work really hard and play at our very best."

"I wouldn't say it was easy, we had to work really hard and play at our very best. They've always got a threat with the quality throughout their team so it was always going to be difficult but it was important to get that first goal and follow it quickly with a second.

"When confidence is a little bit low it does drain out of you however good a player you are you do have those doubts and probably we exposed those doubts later on in the game.

"It's tough being in that position but, with the quality players and manager that they've got, they just need a result and they can go on a good run."

Despite the five goal haul, frontman Chris Budrys was not on the scoresheet but Preece was unconcerned.

"Chris worked really hard for us again, setting things up, doing the donkey work which he does but our two wide players [Ellis Healing and Ryan Wignall] had a massive threat today. 

"I thought they were tremendous but it was a great team performance and remember we've got Ian Kearney, Andy Jones and Lee Owens out of our back four, so it's promising for us going forward.

"If we can maintain what we are doing and improve as we are going along, then to be in third or fourth is not a bad position to start from.

"I think we are getting better, we are getting used to the new pitch the more we play on it and consolidating a top six finish is the toughest thing.

"Everybody seems to be pushing for it, so this win today is big for us because the games are running out."
