Gap Connah's Quay v Airbus

THE Wingmakers booked a place in the semi-final of The Word Cup at the expense of local rivals Gap Connah's Quay thanks to two goals in extra-time at the Deeside Stadium.

The tie was all square at 1-1 and headed for a penalty shoot out when Steve Abbott got the final touch to a curling Toby Jones free-kick.

And three minutes later it was all over for the Nomads when Mike Hayes hammered a third goal with the home defence at sixes and sevens.

Andy Preece made wholesale changes from the side that had beaten The New Saints on Friday night, with starts for Stephen Connor and youngster Zyiac Edwards.

And Airbus acquitted themselves well in the first half, with Edwards showing some deft footwork on the edge of the box for Hayes to put the goal in the net, only to be ruled offside.

But the visitors deservedly took the lead four minutes before half-time, an unmarked Ian Kearney meeting a corner with a looping header over static keeper Callum Hawthorne.

Nomads came more into the game after the break and equalised on 55 minutes when a punched clearance from Aaron Morrison finally fell to Craig Jones, who curled a 12-yarder into the net.

Hawthorne did well to save after Hayes found himself clean through on goal, with Rob Jones forcing a save from Morrison at the other end.

But neither side was able to make a breakthrough in normal time and the tie looked headed for a penalty shoot-out until the late show set-up a semi-final meeting with The New Saints on Thursday November 8.

Home advantage will be decided by a draw on Wednesday.
