THE New Saints got the point they needed to clinch the Welsh Premier title as Airbus held the champions to a draw for a fourth time in league action this season.

But the Wingmakers came mighty close to pooping the Saints' celebrations, going close to a winner twice in the closing moments after matching their full-time opponents all the way.

Making his first start of the year on the road back from injury, Glenn Rule went close with a 25-yarder which whistled over the crossbar in only the second minute.

But keeper James Coates was soon called into action, making a good save low down from Chris Jones and then punching clear from the resulting corner.

Playing in the centre of defence, Andy Jones did well to head a Jamie Mullan cross to safety under pressure from Mike Wilde before Steve Jones spun off his marker and turned to fire inches wide of the home goal from 20 yards.

Andy Jones was just unable to make contact with a teasing free kick from Rule, who then hammered a shot against the near post after good work down the left by Steve Jones.

But, within a minute, the Wingmakers were a goal down when a suicidal Ashley Williams back pass was intercepted by Matty Williams who squared for Wilde to score.

Chris Budrys headed over from another excellent Rule delivery as the visitors were unlucky to go in to the dressing room a goal down at the break.

Wilde was just wide from a Williams through pass as the action resumed in the second half while Rule's long throw into the box was farmed on by Sam Hart only for Michael Roddy to fire straight at home keeper Paul Harrison.

Chris Seargeant clipped the top of the Airbus bar with a curling 20-yarder before Budrys fired another chance straight at Harrison.

Coates made another superb save to keep out a Wilde drive before Airbus were gifted a chance to get back into the game.

Harrison was adjudged to have pushed sub Jason Oswell at a corner and Tom Field gratefully accepted the chance to level from the spot.

Sub Steve Abbott then sent a shot onto the top of the stanchion from 20 yards in stoppage time before Budrys missed a gilt-edged opportunity to win the game, heading Field's pinpoint cross inches wide from close range.
