THE Wingmakers have boosted their squad ahead of the new season with the signing of Wales Under-23 semi-professional international Jay Owen.

The Caernarfon-born 22-year-old midfielder is a product of Chester's youth policy and was capped by Wales at Under-17 level. He made his Football League debut for Chester away at Port Vale and ended season 2008/9 with seven league appearances to his name as Chester suffered relegation from League Two.

In January 2010, Owen cancelled his contract with the club by mutual consent and joined Conference rivals Wrexham on trial, scoring in a 3–2 friendly win over Airbus.

But he failed to gain a contract and later signed for Barrow in the same division, spending three seasons with the Cumbrians and making 95 appearances.

Owen left when the club was relegated to Conference North at the end of last season and has played several pre-season games for the Wingmakers.

"It's great to have Jay on board just before the season starts," says chif operating officer Stewart Roberts.

"He has played Football League games and Conference too so that will hold him in good stead for the Welsh Premier League.

"With the departure of Wayne Riley and Jordan Johnson last week, Andy Preece will be happy to have bolstered the squad with Jay."
