DESPITE fielding only four recognised first team players, Airbus held Conference outfit Barrow to a goal-less draw at their own Holker Street Stadium on Saturday.

Although the hosts held sway for much of the game, they lacked sufficient cutting edge to engineer regular clear-cut chances from open play, although they regularly threatened from set-pieces.

Airbus started both halves well, but were then often forced on to the back foot.

But their determined rearguard held firm as Barrow strikers Aaron Bowen and Gareth Arnison endured a quiet afternoon in front of goal.

Manager Andy Preece named four trialists on the team sheet as well as some players from the Under-19s.

Barrow came closest to breaking the deadlock after only six minutes with a Reynolds long throw eventually falling to player/coach Alex Meechan.

But the attacker's 15-yard snap-shot crashed against the underside of the bar, before the ball was cleared.

Home keeper Tony McMillan tipped over a 10-yard header from an Airbus trialist, while Mills’s 20-yarder flew just wide on 23 minutes.

Barrow took control as the half wore on, as Airbus keeper Connor Wearing was forced to tip over a Mills corner.

McMillan won a one-on-one duel with another Airbus trialist, before the same player blazed over just before the break.

The mystery forward was then denied a route to goal by McMillan not long after the restart as the stopper came off his line to collect. Mike Roddy fired a 30-yard shot which flew over on 53 minutes and plucky Airbus spurned their best opening six minutes later when Barrow failed to clear a free-kick before Chris Budrys guided the ball wide of the far left-hand post.

With AFC continuing to do most of the pressing triallist striker Josh Amis headed Meechan’s corner straight at Wearing and Davies fired a ferocious 20-yard volley inches wide on 67 minutes.

But Barrow could not make the breakthrough their efforts probably deserved.
