Newtown v Airbus

AIRBUS romped to a record-breaking 7-1 Welsh Premier win over Newtown at Latham Park as striker Steve Abbott claimed a hat-trick.

The Wingmakers' best previous victories had been at home to Welshpool in 2009 and Haverfordwest in 2011, both ending in 5-0 scorelines.

Ironically, their previous best away success was also at Newtown in February when they hit four without reply not long after the appointment of Andy Preece.

The Wingmakers got the perfect start when Lee Owens crossed from the right for Abbott to hit a first-time shot from 12 yards past keeper Dave Roberts.

Ryan Wade almost put Wayne Riley in for another while, at the other end, the Robins threatened briefly with Steve Blenkinsop firing over with a good 20-yard effort.

Abbott was wide with another effort as Airbus dominated and the result was rarely in doubt after they extended their lead mid-way through the half.

Chris Budrys challenged for the ball, which broke nicely for Tom Field to fire through Roberts' grasp.

The rampant visitors were four in front by the break, Ian Kearney beating the home defence to an inswinging free kick to blast home the third from close range, before Steve Tomassen headed home from a corner.

Newtown responded after the break when sub and former Airbus frontman Craig Whitfield reduced the arrears.

But it little effect on the Wingmakers who quickly restored their four-goal cushion when a through ball found Budrys who steered his shot past Roberts.

Abbott, who had earlier had a goal disallowed, got the better of Shane Sutton before advancing into the box to win an one-on-one with Roberts.

And he celebrated his hat-trick in stoppage time, tapping home at the far post from a Jordan Johnson shot.

In so doing he became only the second Wingmaker to hit three goals in a game, emulating the feat of Ian Sheridan.
