Steve Abbott

DIRECTOR of football Andy Preece has made a late swoop for a striker before the transfer window slams shut by signing Steve Abbott, who returns to the Welsh Premier after a two-year absence

Abbott, 30, has previous domestic league experience with The New Saints, where he scored five goals from 15 (+9) appearances in season 2009/10.

After starting his career with Wigan Athletic and playing for Leigh RMI, Congleton Town and St Helens Town, Abbott decided to study for a career in teaching and scored 30 goals in 80 appearances for Team Bath, helping them gain promotion to the Conference South and being voted player of the year.

On the strength of his performances for the University side, he was awarded a two-year deal by Wrexham in the summer of 2008 but, after finding it difficult to break into the first team ranks at the Racecourse, was loaned to TNS in the summer of 2009 before returning to the Racecourse Ground at the end of the season, when he was released and signed for AFC Telford United.

Abbott spent time on-loan with Chorley and Chasetown while with the Bucks and was a June 2011 signing for Preece at Northwich Victoria.

He arrives at the Hollingsworth Group International Airfield after a brief spell with Rushall Olympic.
