DESPITE allowing a two-goal lead to slip through their fingers, a resolute Airbus stuck to their task and defeated Buckley Town 3-2 to remain nine points clear at the top of the table.

With 57 minutes gone, the Wingmakers appeared to be heading for a routine victory. Steve Tomassen had headed them in front after 35 minutes from a Nathan Woolfe flag kick and Sam Hart added the second after Lewis Buckley headed-on a cross into the box.

But the visitors reduced the arrears within a minute thanks to Chris Roberts, who fired goalwards from inside his own half and, despite scrambling back, keeper Dave Roberts was unable to keep the ball out of his net.

Eight minutes later the Bucks were level as Jake Roberts hammered a free kick into the far corner.

But Airbus kept plugging away and were rewarded in the 82nd-minute when Hart provided the opening for Ryan Edwards to beat keeper Joe Makaruk from close range.

Assistant manager Andy Thomas felt his side’s performance bore the hallmarks of champions. He said: “We weren’t at our best by a long way, but we showed good character after being pegged back to find a winner. Even when they scored their second, I felt we had the quality to find a way back into the game.

“We showed why we’re in the position we are this season and why we’ve been so successful so far.”
