TNS 2-1 Airbus UK Broughton (August 29th 2009)

Airbus came out on half cock & TNS took advantage; it was only after the second goal the 'Bus upped their game and by then it was too late as, despite a second half of 75% possession the slick home side were content to sit on their three points and hit the Wingmen on the break.

Kristian Rogers pulled off a good save from Steve Abbott as he burst through a static defence in the first ten minutes, a precursor to an awful goal on 19'. Berkeley was left all alone for a ball into the box, Rogers made a good block but Abbot was allowed to just wander into the area as Airbus stood about, simply shooting home unchallenged. With Airbus still asleep Ryan Edwards had to clear an Evans header off the line only three minutes later. Danny Desormeaux did try to liven things up by picking up a loose ball, running on and firing wide but immediately TNS got their second, ex-Wingmaker Craig Jones waltzing down the right unchallenged to play inside to the unmarked Woods to score with the help of a Sudlow deflection. Berkeley was allowed a free shot, blocked by Rogers, then came a sign of a bit more application; Ryan Edwards battled to win the ball on the right touchline, fed Matty Cook who, after a little pacy dribble, clipped over for Marc Lloyd-Williams to head in on the line.

The second half was a lot more positive, no doubt Craig Harrison having pointed out you can't beat TNS of all teams by strolling around half-heartedly. Straight away Carl Owen was set through but couldn't quite get control of the racing ball skidding off the plastic pitch. The half wore on with Airbus encamped in the TNS half, doing well but not finding each other beyond the first pass, TNS' defence superbly marshalled. Their only other chance came when a Cooky cross was just flicked wide of the post by Jiws. Airbus were in control but The Saints were always dangerous on their forays, calm & confident with their neat, one touch game, in fact hitting the post two minutes into added time. Credit to the 'Bus for the second half, at least and also to the pasties, who this year seem to have had some taste stuffed into them, although the chewy pastry defences proved quite stubborn.
