Rhyl 4-0 Airbus UK Broughton Lge cup (September 22nd 2009)

The League Cup squad did their best against Rhyl's near full-strength team and kept going to the end but this was an exhibition of The Lilywhites' attacking prowess that at times scythed through the Airbus' over-worked defence and ultimately 4-0 could easily have been more.

The merciless home side were after a goal bonanza from the start and set about the 'Bus in a most unwelcoming manner. Phil Palethorpe had an outstanding night despite the battering he got and swept up well on numerous occasions when the likes of Gareth Owen, Mark Connolly and Paul Smith split the defence to set themselves up at times at will. Tyrone Kirk also took the eye for the home side with his twisting trickery.

After having all the opening play, Rhyl finally scored, Gareth Owen, clean through, playing it to Connolly who tucked neatly away. Tyrone Kirk added the second, riding over three tackles like he was practising for the Calgary Rodeo and slamming inside the post with his left foot.  Number three arrived with some neat headwork by Gaz; as Airbus' defence hesitated Doran nipped in with his own header to nod home. The half ended, however, with George Cowell sending in a hopeful lob that bounced off the Rhyl crossbar but the home side had already rattled the other woodwork on a couple of occasions so no complaints at that.

The second half resumed in the same fashion, Rhyl looking for more. Paley produced a fine one-handed tip-over from Kirk but then the defence was split wide open again by a great ball from Smith on the half way line, sending Connolly racing through to slam clinically home with the 'Bus caught totally cold. Connolly then managed to hit both posts at the same time in spectacular fashion before ex-Chester City favourite Dave Cameron came on for an oafish comic cameo, throwing himself around as though it mattered and spooning several chances anywhere but on target to huge laughs all round.

A stuffing then for the second string but the boys worked hard all night, especially the lively Drew 'Duracell' Sherman and both former City boys Mitch & Little Macca who never stopped trying until they were given breathers on three-quarter time. Young Jack Abraham & George Cowell were other bright lights as the League Cup involvement came to an end for another year.
