Airbus UK 0-2 Prestatyn
Town (September 9 2009)
A brave showing by
the battling second
string against a strong Seasiders side but ultimately they were always struggling to compete on level terms.
The defence got
in an awful mess after only four minutes as a left wing cross
came in, Neil Gibson bamboozling them further and the ball
fell to Jolly
Rogers back at the near post to control, side-step his
marker and calmly score low into the net.
Two minutes later he
was there again, unmarked on the line only to turn it the
wrong side of the post. The
'Bus tried their best to recover but it became a long night against the
superior quality of the
visitors. That's not to say there was no spirit in the side
and their never-say-die attitude made sure Prestatyn couldn't
relax for the whole ninety minutes. Palethorpe saved well from
Griffiths as he raced through a huge hole and Airbus' first effort
didn't come until twenty minutes in, when Drew Sherman shot
tamely at the 'keeper. Sherman, lately of Hucknall Town,
scampered about all night on his debut and swerved another
over the bar shortly after before clattering the boards from
close in. In the meantime Griffiths hammered a shot just wide having stormed
down the left with the marking all to
pieces again. McManus slammed a shot in after a good ball from
Jack Abraham that took the surprised Matt Towns off his
legs in goal, Rogers headed a Lewis cross over when it looked
easier to score and Sherman harried the defence allowing
James McIntosh to have a shot, weakly though and easily
saved.
The second half
got off to as bad a start as the first had. A free kick was
played over by Steve Hoult and David
Hayes got by weak resistance to firmly head in.
Rogers then played Williams in, who should have done better
than hammer a left-footer wide. Airbus kept going and
had their best spell on the 65' mark, with Andy
Mitchell cutting in from the right to swing a low one
across that troubled the diving Towns, followed by his fierce
free kick Towns touched acrobatically onto the bar and over.
Griffiths again should have scored with only Paley to beat
from the right of the box and as Airbus gamely plugged away Paul
McManus had a glorious chance for a
consolation, failing to steer his pounce on a clearance into
the net with Towns stranded.
The league
cup squad had set themselves high standards in the
first two games against Prestatyn & Rhyl. Two-nil isn't a
bad result in the right perspective but it's still
two-nil and these days we don't like losing!
