Cefn Druids 1-1 Airbus UK Broughton(March 10th 2010)
On a day when Chester City were finally put out of
their misery (a bit like hearing the ex-wife had
died) Airbus chose to mark the occasion of an end
to years of largely inconsequential football at
Sealand Road and The Deva with a suitably dire
performance of their own. Back was the crab-like
movement, erratic punts and almost total unawareness
of the boundaries of the woodwork round the goal that
let a young & poor Druids side harry their way to what
was very nearly only their second win of the season.
The first half passed by virtually devoid of
noticeable activity on a freezing evening. Craig
Whitfield calmly strode forward and as no-one
challenged him scored into the bottom corner to put
the home side ahead. Up until then Airbus had looked
comfortable and in no danger. Too comfortable, too
relaxed, they struggled to take control as Druids shut
up shop, the only close shave coming when Ricky Wright
headed off the line from a Lloyd-Williams hook.
The second half was almost as awful, The 'Bus fannying
around and finding striped shirts with far too many
aimless passes. Yet again they showed they were unable
to cope with a team whose sole concern was to scurry
around, hustling & bustling and packing the final
third, without coming forward unless they were forced
to. Airbus had great chances, though. Carl Owen was
presented with a header from a terrific Jamie Smith
cross, unfortunately straight at Mullock to tip over
and James McIntosh scooped at a ball played into the
area and blasted a left footer over when some
composure & aim was needed. In between Druids missed
an open goal at the far post as the offside trap
failed and as time ticked by Jamie Crowther headed a
glorious free one over with the goal at his mercy.
Airbus, for all their deficiencies, were to their
credit now working hard and persistence paid off with
The Ancients bench screaming for the final whistle and
a famous victory. With over four minutes of added time
on the clock a sudden surge saw a right royal ping
around, Jiws finally stabbing home from a rebound off
Mullock. Starlight robbery maybe and if it wasn't for
the anguished big-nosed Wayne Phillips' Wxm connection
you'd have felt sorry for him. Almost.
Chester City RIP. Come on The 'Bus!!!!!!!!!!
