Airbus were in no mood to lose again to the Nomads and revenge was sweet
coming after last week's cup exit, made even better with a four-nil second
half stuffing.
Marc Lloyd-Williams fluffed an early chance for The 'Bus, taking a Jack
Abraham cross but when a power strike was needed, not a tap, he tried a
flick & flicked wide. He was also involved in the next significant move of
the game, weaving back away from his markers in central field to play Matty
Cook down the wing, his quick cross to Carl Owen turned over the bar. The
Nomads took almost half an hour to do anything, when Craig 'Tigger'
Jones only half hit a Michael Hayes pass, followed by an Alan Hooley power
drive, well parried by Kris Rogers. Just before the interval Carl Owen burst
into the left side of the area but his final shot couldn't find its way past
the massed Quay rearguard.
There was a brief scare at the start of the second half, Matty Woodward
losing the ball to Hayes on the edge of the area but his poor effort was
easily gathered by Rogers. Then came the opener, Jiws played the ball out to
Abraham, he played it back in return, Jiws laid it off with his chest
and Carlo rifled it in. Immediately Airbus won the ball back, got a corner
and nearly a second, as Gio Feliciello's follow-up shot bounced off 'keeper
McCormick's body as he was floundering around, wondering where the ball had
gone and looking the wrong way. It was only a prelude, however, number two
coming swiftly afterwards, Jiws again involved, having his best game so far
without scoring, his overhead kick looping up for Cooky to steady himself
and purposefully head home, uncharacteristically quite gracefully, really.
Number three was one of those wonderful goals you see & start celebrating a
mile off. Jiws sent over a fantastically judged corner to Rhys Roberts,
storming into a space the size of the Argentinian pampas, racing onto the
head-height ball without breaking pace and sending a spectacular screaming
header straight into the back netting.
With the 'Bus well on top it was now
a question of how many. Within a minute McCormick pulled off a acrobatic
stretching fall-back and gather off a Jiws chip. The Nomads, however,
managed to steady things a little until the last ten minutes, when Airbus,
flooded with enthusiastic substitute energy went for their throats again.
Carl Owen & Danny Desormeaux played a neat on-two before Carlo forced
McCormick into a save then Niall Challinor showed great control
and timing to hold off his man & slip the ball through to Gary McConnell. In
a one-on-one run he blasted confidently past McCormick for the fourth. Danny
Desormeaux could have hit a record-equalling fifth with a minute to go but
only smashed into the rear hoardings, wide of the post.
