For a long while this game trundled on in the warm Ceredigion
sunshine. Airbus were
rarely troubled and Aberystwyth appeared lethargic and devoid of ideas.
Nothing happened in the first quarter other than a Glyndwr Hughes header over
the bar for the home side. With the 'Bus suddenly realising the game was
theirs for the taking they upped the pace and there was no coming back
for Aber.
Matty Cook engineered the opener, crossing for Ryan Edwards to drive the ball
low and hard into the net, his first goal in open play and suitable
celebration of winning his Welsh Non-League U23 cap in the week.
The home side
nearly fell two behind shortly after, 'keeper Steven
Cann producing a great one-handed save off a Marc
Lloyd-Williams scissor kick, turning the ball out for a corner. Jiws
had another chance approaching half time, running through but for once
hurrying and shooting too early, Cann saving easily.
The second half was all Airbus, Aberystwyth having no answer to the
midfield wizardry of Airbus' other new international, Ashley
Williams or the stunning forward play of Carl Owen as they tied the
Black & Greens in knots. Jiws was again clean through but once more failed
to hit it hard enough and Cann saved. Cann somehow kept out an effort from
Desormeaux. Carl Owen drove one in, the 'keeper fisting away one-handed.
Ashley Williams started a great move that ended with Giovanni Feliciello
bouncing one off the crossbar. Mark
Allen clipped the ball goal bound from a corner, Cann tipping it
over for a great save.
Then came a goal the Airbus hordes will talk about
forever; a fantastic flowing move that seemed to involve everyone, turning
Aber inside out as the attack swept down the right like a red tsunami,
swooshing back into the centre for Carl Owen to turn in at the far post as the
away terrace roared in jubilation.
There was just time for another. Gio fired in a free kick that seemed to hit
an Airbus shirt; as the balled bobbled around Lloyd-Williams pounced, this
time making no mistake as he smashed the ball in to round off a splendid
afternoon.
