Airbus UK Broughton 1-0 Welshpool Town - April 17 2009
An impressive
performance from the 'Bus, who showed exactly what they can do when they
put their minds to it. They controlled the game from start to finish and
were rewarded with a record win over one of the form teams in the
league. They scored the first after just ten minutes. Ryan Edwards sent
in a speculative shot from out wide that Danny Jones inexplicably dived
forward to punch away, instead of simply gathering it, straight to Mark
Cadwallader, who promptly fired the opener into the roof of the net
(1-0).
It took a long period
of Airbus control before Welshpool had any sort of chance but it was a
glorious opportunity wasted when it arrived. A burst down the left and a
low cross found Paul Roberts; with lots of time to choose his options,
he fired wide of a gaping goal. Half time arrived with Airbus full of
confidence against an increasingly frustrated Town side, in particular
manager Huw Griffiths, ranting at everything as his side struggled to
get to grips with The Blues' slick play & harrying tackling. They
didn't let up in the second half and soon had their opponents in trouble
again, Jones desperately heading & chesting clearing quick
succession. Straight away, however, Jack Rowlands gave the ball away,
Steve Rogers played Martin McCubbin through & he sent his shot
across goal but wide. The second for The Wingmakers was just around the
corner and arrived via a Giovanni Feliciello cross, firmly headed into
the net by Tom Rowlands (2-0).
Phil Molyneux came on
as sub and immediately raced into the area with the ball but his killer
instincts let him down again as he allowed Jones to make the save at his
feet. The last ten minutes rounded off this lively, physically tough
encounter in explosive style. First Caddy had the chance for his second,
twice setting himself up in the area with skilful touches but unable to
engineer the final touch. Welshpool had a go, Timmy Edwards heading a
corner goal-bound, well saved by Palethorpe, Keegan putting a gentle
header onto the crossbar from the rebound. Caddy did then get his brace,
Geraint Windsor getting a straight red for fouling him on the way to
goal, his victim stepping up to consummately slide in the penalty (3-0).
To round things off Gary McConnell came on and after Gio had hit the
post from a run down the left and Matty Cook had crossed the ball back
into the middle, got his first goal for the club with a perfectly guided
header (4-0). Evidently enjoying that a lot, he prowled around the area
in the next attack and after Danny Desormeaux had headed back another
Cookie cross, slammed in another for good measure (5-0).
