Airbus UK Broughton 2 Kidsgrove Athletic 1 (Sat 25th July)
Airbus
followed up their encouraging matches against Newcastle Town (3-1 up
but conceding a late penalty to level things) and an Everton XI
(leading but going down to a narrow defeat to the Premiership team's giant
youngsters) with an interesting game against a Unibond Div 1 South
side.
Kidsgrove opened the scoring after only a few minutes. Matt Haddrell scored,
his free
kick calmly driven into the net after Phil Palethorpe had made a hash
of a cross then inadvertently collecting the resultant shot outside his
area. A rather dull opening half followed, that being the only moment
of note.
The visitors probably shaded it but neither side made any real chances in
open play. Airbus came out with a bit more purpose in the second half, got a quick
equaliser and remorselessly wore down their opponents to end up comfortable
winners. James McIntosh levelled things after Matty Cook had laid the ball
back for him to lash in from the edge of the box.
Cooky then did the same
for Paul McManus to sweetly guide in for 2-1. The last 10 minutes saw the only chances for
Kidsgrove, Paley confidently flicking a long range Danny Smith drive over
and Haddrell being given a free header he poorly directed over.
