Airbus UK Broughton 1-0 NEWI Cefn Druids - April 11 2009
This was a stroll in the sunny park for an
Airbus side rarely tested
by a disappointingly weak Druids team but a single early goal was all they had
to show; for the statisticians it extended their personal record goal tally to
42 in the league & equalled their personal best of 11 league wins in a season
since elevation to the Welsh Premier.
The goal came after only six minutes. Gio Feliciello stormed down the left
wing, sent in a short low cross, a little nudge found Danny Desormeaux and
he side-footed into the roof of the net from the six-yard box. That was
virtually it for the first half, the fans basking in the Spring sun as a
kick-around went on on the pitch. Just on half-time, however, The 'Bus nearly
paid for their complacency as
Geraint Lewis found himself on the end of a diagonal cross, Phil
Palethorpe hesitating then recovering well to block the shot, the rebound
luckily going out to safety.
The second half opened brightly with the news that
Chester City had won at
Accrington Stanley &
Airbus continued to be well on top, just needing a second to finish it off. It
was The Druids, however, who nearly benefited from a piece of luck, Geraint
Lewis taking a ball down the left to cross,
Mark Allen spooning his clearance and Palethorpe producing a sharp
one-handed reaction save to keep the ball out. The skipper then had a chance
at the other end with a back post header that also went in the wrong direction
before Tom Rowlands ran down the middle to send in a low left-footer, met with
a fine hand-and-foot drop-stop from Gerard McGuigan. Gio then sent a free kick
onto sub Phil Molyneux's head but he managed to head it back for a clearance
rather than burying it; from the resulting corner Mark Allen was this time
impeded by another blue shirt, only sending the ball wide.
They had their
final chance with just under ten minutes to go, Molyneux receiving a sweeping
cross but not controlling it when it just needed guiding in. Airbus then
generously allowed Druids a couple of chances to end the game: following a
corner Palethorpe made a good one-handed save by the post from a Lewis header
and then Adam Hesp crossed for fellow sub
Mark Stewart to rise high & head firmly in but wide to a gasp of relief
in the stand. AIRBUS: Palethorpe,
