Nomads
2-3 Airbus
UK Broughton - March 7th
Airbus ran rings around a dishevelled Nomads defence in the first half & looked
like they'd run up a cricket score but they took their foot of the gas in the second period and
were almost bitten on the bum for it as the home side suddenly scored two late goals to get the trembles going.
Gareth Sudlow could have opened the scoring after only 4', getting under
a free back-post cross & heading over. Just after the quarter-hour
mark a James McIntosh smash was cleared off the line from an angle at the near
post as The 'Bus had the
Nomads defence in a tangle in a goalmouth scramble.
On 20' Gio Feliciello had
a golden chance as the ball dropped to him but delayed & only won a
corner. From that, however, Airbus did score, Mark
Allen tapping in on the line after a flick-on. Just two minutes later
they added a second, Gareth Sudlow with a simple effort high into the net from
a little lay-off. Then they had a couple of defensive lapses. First Matty
Woodward slipped, letting Aden
Shannon in but Chris
Doran made a good save then the defence lost their cool, just escaping as
the ball skimmed the post on its way out from the final shot. They were soon
back up the other end, though, scoring again. Macca, Phil Molyneux & Ashley
Williams stormed down the field on a single defender and after passing
it around amongst each other Ashley finally put the ball in the net after
they'd toyed with the keeper like three bullying cats with a mouse. They laid
siege to the Nomads goal in the last five minutes of the half. Mark Allen
flashed a shot wide; Macca should have scored when clean through, Terry
McCormick getting down to his feet as he took it a little too far;
Ashley Williams forced McCormick into a good save with a fair drive.
The smug Airbus following settled back at the start of the second half
awaiting the rout and forecasting record scores but the game degenerated
into a nothing affair, The 'Bus not extending themselves & The Nomads with
little idea after an initial rush of enthusiasm, easily soaked up. Danny
Desormeaux was waltzing through to score before the ball was smothered at his
feet as he tried to walk it in and the goalie made a good save with his legs
as Mark Allen slid in for a good attempt at the back post. Other than that it
was pretty boring. Suddenly Connah's Quay got one back, a Ronnie Morgan header
unable to be kept out by Doran and then got a penalty, awarded for a
shove, promptly firmly dispatched by Liam Loughlin. It would hardly have
been credible if they'd equalised and time ran out for them as Airbus
stiffened up to preserve the points that takes them up to 8th place.
