THE Wingmakers will be hoping for another miserly defensive display when they host Rhyl at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium on Friday night (7.30pm).

Airbus currently lie fifth, five points off second place, and are in good shape to push on for a place in the top six, despite a season severely disrupted by injuries.

The defence has been particularly hard hit, with director of football Andy Preece struggling to field for a settled back four ever since the early games of the campaign.

But his players have responded well, keeping clean sheets in three of their last five outings, including last week's 2-0 Welsh Cup success at Haverfordwest.

"It was particularly pleasing to get another clean sheet with the changes we've had to make to the back four," said Preece.

"The clean sheet was important as we've been swapping and changing all season.

"The conditions were not conducive to playing much football, we just had to dig in and take what chances came along.

"We’ve now won four of our last six games, two clean sheets in our last three, which is good going considering the problems we've had.

"Apart from the first five or 10 minutes in the second half when they had a couple of chances, we defended really well, before we started to get on top and scored the goals."

Airbus have won their last two home meetings with Rhyl but have a score to settle after losing 1-0 at Belle Vue back in October in which a defensive error proved decisive.

Defender and skipper Ian Kearney, who has missed over a year after undergoing knee surgery, is close to a comeback as is fellow central defender Mike Pearson.
