Both sides used the competition to hand starts to players who have been on the fringes of their first team squads, but it was the Saints who looked most assured early-on.

Keeper James Coates did well to keep out an early efforts from Ryan Kershaw while the Wingmakers survived a couple of highly-speculative penalty shouts from the home side.

Connell Rawlinson saw an excellent strike sail over the visitors' crossbar before TNS took the lead.

A poor clearance out of defence by Mike Roddy found Kershaw who fired a low shot into the corner from the edge of the box.

A minute before the break, Roddy had the chance to atone for his error but, despite controlling the ball well, fired his shot well over.

Early in the second half TNS extended their lead from a good breakaway move which ended with Adrian Cieslewicz crossing from the right to find Ryan Fraughan, who directed the ball into an empty net from two yards out.

Both sides hit the woodwork within a minute, Matty McGinn rattling the home bar with Chris Mullock helpless and Scott Quigley striking the post from a tight angle at the other end.

Substitute Glenn Rule almost reduced the arrears from a free-kick after a Kai Edwards handball on the edge of the box, but Mullock made a fine save to prevent the midfielder's shot finding the bottom corner.

But Rule did succeed in setting-up a tense finale when he fired home in the 88th-minute.

The Wingmakers surged forward in an attempt to take the tie into extra-time, but the Saints were able to survive the final minutes to reach the quarter-finals.
