THE Wingmakers' assistant manager Andy Morrison faces an enforced absence from the dugout as he undergoes major surgery next Monday at Manchester's Wythenshawe Hospital.

The 44-year-old Inverness-born former Manchester City defender, known throughout football as "Jock", missed the away Europa League tie in Norway while he underwent tests and it was discovered he had a large tumour in his chest.

Happily, the initial diagnosis is that the tumour is benign and it will be removed on Monday.

Jock then faces two days in a high-dependency unit, followed by a week in hospital, and hopes he will have made a full recovery within three months.

While Andy is away, the club has recruited 'A' licensed coach and ex-member of the Airbus management team Darren Ryan to assist director of football Andy Preece.

Andy Morrison arrived at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium with Preece in January 2012 and has become renowned for his detailed analysis of opposition players and tactics, as well as his commanding touchline presence.

He started his career with Plymouth Argyle in 1987 and went on to forge a successful career as an uncompromising centre-half with a broad Plymothian accent with Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Huddersfield Town, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

After his departure from Bury, where he had been on trial, Andy decided to retire from the playing side of the game and became assistant manager to Preece at Worcester City.

He continued to be part of Preece's management team, working with him at Northwich Victoria.

Morrison was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Blackpool when it was officially opened by former Tangerines' player Jimmy Armfield in April 2006.

He is also an official fan ambassador for Manchester City, acting as a key link between club and fans.

Everyone at the club wishes Jock a successful outcome to his operation and a speedy return to the dugout.
