IT'S exactly 10 years ago today since Airbus UK made their debut in the Welsh Premier League.

And the newly-promoted Wingmakers, who topped the Cymru Alliance by a distance to gain promotion, showed they would be no pushover in the top flight by upsetting the odds to gain a shock 1-0 opening day win over Newtown at Latham Park.

The afternoon could not have got off to a worse start when the Airmen were delayed by a serious accident on the A483 and were forced to leave out striker Lee Acott and central defender John Davies, who were still stuck in traffic when the game kicked off 30 minutes late.

Both sides struggled to create chances from a packed midfield, although Newtown's Gareth Hughes tested Wingmakers' keeper Andy Hughes and Steve Hughes saw a header well saved at the other end.

In a brighter start to the second half by the generally lack-lustre Robins, ex-Guilsfield midfielder Andrew Webb had the best chance to open their account, but his lob failed to beat the keeper.

And the Wingmakers clinched the win they had deserved when former Newtown man Andy Thomas stepped up to fire a quickly-taken 25-yard free kick past a stunned home defence still adjusting their wall.

Rob Lythe's men could have increased their lead but Richard Smart saw a low shot turned round the post.

"Under the circumstances I thought we were absolutely brilliant," said manager Lythe.

"After the first 15 minutes we grew in confidence and I knew we could win it after that."

The Airbus team that day was: Andy Hughes, Andy Thomas, John Dowridge, Paul Dodd, Steve Hughes, James Dean, Simon Peers, Joe Desormeaux (John Davies 89'), James Hussanney (Lee Acott 80'), James McIntosh, Richard Smart. Sub not used: John Farrell.
