THE Wingmakers made a winning start to life in the Huws Gray Alliance, but were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory by newly-promoted Llandudno Junction.

With Alfons Fosu-Mensah and Luke Busumbru awaiting international clearance, manager Andy Thomas was left with few options in his team selection and Aaron Bowen was left to plough a lone furrow upfront in a game dominated by a strong end-to-end wind, which made life difficult for both sides.

Former Airbus Under-19 keeper Keighan Jones made a good save to keep out a Wes Baynes rocket in a first half of few chances and Steve Tomassen headed over the bar from a Baynes corner. Airbus were also denied a stonewall penalty with the referee awarding a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Despite being under the cosh, the Railwaymen almost took the lead straight after half time when Lee Ellis forced a good save from Andy Coughlin. The hosts responded with a good shot from Leo Riley whistling just wide of a post and Mark Jones had a shot from outside the box saved.

But on 57 minutes the pressure finally told when keeper Jones was unable to cut out a corner and Thomassen stooped to head home from six yards.

With a precarious one-goal lead, Airbus rarely looked troubled at the back, but Coughlin did well to get down low to save a free kick which proved to be the last kick of the game.
